Peening
is a permanent direct product marking (DPM) process used to
identify alphanumeric characters, 2D codes (including
Mil-Std 130 UID compliant Data Matrix codes), bar codes,
custom graphics and logos onto metal or hard surfaces. The process
of dot peening encompasses the use of a multiple-axis stylus
point which hits the part like a ball-peen hammer and leaves
a small dimple. It is an impact marking process that is either
electrically or pneumatically driven depending on what material
is used. The most common materials used for peening are metals
that have hardness ratings up to 62. Other materials such as
plastics and hardwoods are good peening candidates.
Peening
is a relatively inexpensive DPM process, in comparison to laser
marking, resulting in no consumables. JETEC peening systems
comply with SPEC 2000, AIAG, DoD, and DT05-89.
JETEC
peening systems are ideal solutions for permanent marking of
metal and plastic parts, of various shapes and surface conditions.
Applications include aerospace and automotive parts identification,
metal tags, castings, medical plastic molded parts, etc. Designed
for industrial application integration JETEC peening systems
can be integrated on production lines or in automatic/semi-automatic
assembly or test stations. Choose from turnkey, table-top solutions
featuring an integrated PC for peening system control and marking
file storage or systems featuring an independent user-friendly
control unit (screen & internal software & keyboard)
which eliminates the need for a PC or PLC. Peening systems are
available that can be PLC controlled.
IPCS™
Integrated Peening Control Software
IPCS
Integrated Peening Control Software is standard with JETEC’s
pneumatic and electro-magnetic controlled peening systems. IPCS
provides the following minimum system support capabilities:
- Create/Modify
and Save Part Marking Format Files
- I/O
Management (6 Input and 2 Output board standard)
- Variable
Data Translation (supports date & time codes, shift codes,
serial numbers, lot codes, etc.)
- Management
of text style and dot-peen matrices, including: choice of
internal peening fonts, character height selection (adjustable
in stems of 0.1 mm), compression, spacing, justification and
automatic centering.
- Linear,
angular, radial, inclination, inverted and mirrored marking
- Downloading
of custom fonts and logos
Optional
IPCS software functionality includes:
- Use
of standard Windows fonts (Times New Roman, Arial, etc.)
- Standard
bar code symbologies (UPCA, Code 39, Code 128, EAN, HBIC,
etc.)
- Mil-Std
130 UID compliant, Construct #1 or Construct #2, 2D code support
- READ
– MARK (PEEN) – INSPECT, where:
-
READ allows the input of marking information
via a bar code reader, camera, shop floor control look-up,
serial input, scale, PLC, etc.
- MARK
is the actual peening of the part in accordance with the
selected marking file and variable information input
- INSPECT
invokes the inspection of the peened mark using an integrated
bar code reader, 2D code reader or verifier, vision system,
etc. Sets pass or fail flag, displays operator required
action and updates optional internal database.
- JETEC
ImageView™ Software (allows the assignment of up to
3 images per marking file. Ideal for displaying “golden”
mark image, correct part marking location and specific part
marking instructions)
- Communicate
with optional system accessories (motorized Z-axis, integrated
rotary marking device, safety enclosures, etc.)
- Custom
Front End Software Support – User defined process support
Mil-Std
130 UID Verification
 |
Mil-Std
130M specifies in Section 5.2.7.2.1 the “marks that
are acceptable per the requirements for printing on label
material in 5.2.7.2.2 shall be acceptable or alternately
see appropriate tables in SAE AS9132 for quality requirements.
SAE AS9132 is the Aerospace Industry Marking Standard. |
Unless,
otherwise specified in the contract or order, the UID
2D, Data Matrix symbol shall have a minimum print quality
grade of 3.0 when measured with an aperture size of 0.005
inch (0.127mm) with a light source wavelength of 660 nm
+10 nm. There are exceptions whereby the Modulation (MOD),
Symbol Contrast (SC), or both may measure as low as 2.0
(C) providing the overall grade would be 3.0 if the
MOD and SC grades are 3.0 or higher. |
JETEC’s
line of peening systems are available with integrated or standalone
UID verification systems. Our verification systems are capable
of printing paper reports or storing verification data within
onboard or networked databases. Peeing is a direct product marking
(DPM) process and thus must be verified using a DPM certified
verification system.
Successful
implementation of a DPM peening process requires a knowledgeable
vendor or systems integrator who stays abreast of the changing
Mil-Std 130 requirements, has first-hand experience with the numerous
2D code scanners (hand-held and fixed mount) available from a
host of manufacturers but is unbiased in identifying the right
scanner or hardware for your specific application. The Team at
JETEC can identify a robust, user friendly, UID
compliant system and provide training, consulting and on-site
assistance ensuring cost improvement, enhanced quality and satisfying
industry specific and government mandates.
